Tanzania is an East African country known for its vast wilderness areas. They include the plains of Serengeti National Park, a safari mecca populated by the “big five” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino), and Kilimanjaro National Park, home to Africa’s highest mountain. Offshore lie the tropical islands of Zanzibar, with Arabic influences, and Mafia, with a marine park home to whale sharks and coral reefs.
We leave the rumble and adventure of Victoria Falls behind us as we make the journey south to Zimbabwe’s largest National Park: Hwange National Park. Hwange which is home to Africa’s largest herds of elephant. We travel to Matopos National Park marvel at the magnificent precariously balanced granite boulders before setting off on a game drive. On we go to visit the iron age ruins of the Royal Palace of Great Zimbabwe with walls 5 meters high and no mortar in sight – Sub-Saharan’s largest and most important stone ruins and a very special archaeological site. Eight soapstone carved birds were found here, depicted on Zimbabwe’s national flag.

The Lemosho Route is the route that is furthest from Moshi on the far west of the mountain, and the drive to the start of the trek takes over two hours. The vehicle drives on a narrow road through farmland. You will pass busy villages and maize and vegetable fields. This is a very scenic route and you walk through a series of valleys, and up to Mti Mkubwa Camp you will be accompanied by an armed ranger in case you meet elephants, buffalo or other big game. You will often see Black & White Colobus Monkeys and Blue Monkeys in the forest.
