Hotel Club Akumal Caribe

Akumal, Mexico

Travel tips to Riviera Maya & Yucatan Peninsula

Akumal’s unique bay with its clear, blue-green waters and glistening white sand beaches that never burn your feet is stunning, inviting and uncrowded – and it offers a safe bay for children of all ages. In addition to a world of diving and water sports, Akumal ( Mayan for place of the turtles) also offers water activities, jungle walks, exotic bird and wildlife photography and nearby, in the tropical jungle are easily accessible ruins of ancient Mayan cities that you can either visit on your own or with a guide.

Home base for your Mexican Caribbean adventure is the beautiful Hotel Club Akumal Caribe. Here you’ll feel more like a guest at a friend’s beach house than a customer at a resort.

The property offers a number of different accommodations including a 21 room beachfront hotel, garden bungalows, a suite, a studio, 3 condos and 2 villas.

The resort prides itself on its cuisine and you can enjoy breakfast and dinner overlooking Akumal’s main bay from the veranda of the Lol-ha dining room (closed September/October). The dining room also offers dance shows and live music during high season.

If you want something more “laid back” the Palapa Snack Bar is the ideal spot for meals while spending the day at the beach, or after having explored the area.It has a diverse menu and you can order many authentic local dishes, prepared by hand by the local Mayan staff. Cochinita pibil tacos, or the Mexican plate are favorites.  It also offers salads and sandwiches and advertises the best burgers in town! Everything from a Cheeseburger to a Deluxe Burger, as well as the Lol Ha Burger stuffed with Poblano peppers and cheese, and topped with avocado and bacon!!! It is more than a mouthful. If this isn’t enough to whet your appetite you can also enjoy a pizza or pasta at the Lol-ha Pizzeria.

Divers staying at the resort can arrange for a variety of dive trips and rent equipment at the Akumal Dive Center – a PADI training facility featuring resort courses and full certification. Training for underwater cave (cenote) diving is also available.

Fishing trips, snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing and raft rentals can all be arranged with the friendly dive shop personnel.

One of our personal favorite activities is snorkeling in Yal-Ku Lagoon which lies about 1.5 miles north of the hotel. This is a great spot to spend a few hours relaxing in  landscaped gardens and enjoying clear waters teeming with fish.

If you love the Riviera Maya but are looking for somewhere less crowded than Cancun or Playa Del Carmen then Akumal may just be the place for you.
